Heading into the penultimate back-to-back on the 2024-25 NBA Regular Season schedule, Ivica Zubac paused to talk about how much he has benefited from playing alongside James Harden at the Los Angeles Clippers.
The experienced point guard, the most valuable player of the 2017-18 season, joined the 28-year-old Croatian center in the Los Angeles franchise at the beginning of the 2023-24 season. The second joint expedition has propelled Zubac to career highs of 16.4 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per contest.
“Everything, since he got here,” he told ESPN, describing the extent of overall help from Harden, “I’ve been wanting to play with a point guard like that my whole life. The guy who is probably one of the best pick-and-roll players ever. It’s been great for me. He installed a lot of confidence in me, a lot of swag, as he says.”
This season, Zubac has also emerged among the main candidates for the Defensive Player of the Year.
“Earlier in my career, a lot of people said, ‘I’m not a good defender’, ‘I can’t defend’, called me out a lot,” he recalled those doubting his defensive talent, “I wanted to prove people wrong.”
While building a campaign, his teammates recently sported jerseys combining the pronunciation of his name with an attached note on the DPOY award.
“It means a lot,” Zubac welcomed the initiative, “When you’re recognized by your peers, by your teammates, guys who you go to war on the court.”

After defeating the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, the Clippers move to the NBA Saturdays and will take on the depleted Mavs again in Intuit Dome. At 45-32, they are tied with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Memphis Grizzlies in sixth place of the Western Conference standings.
