Wrestling Finishes Day One of NCAA Championships in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA – No. 25 ranked University of Missouri wrestling concluded day one of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Tigers secured four wins on the day, split between Keegan O’Toole, Cam Steed and J Conway. Steed will see action in the 165-pound consolation bracket, and O’Toole will prepare for the 174-pound quarterfinals.

SESSION I

Two Tigers picked up first-round wins to open the tournament for Mizzou. Big 12 finalist Steed and two-time National Champion O’Toole both advanced to the second round.

O’Toole’s win came by fall over Rider’s Michael Wilson, winner of the pigtail bout between the 32 and 33 seeds. Following several reviews, Steed secured a close victory to advance at 165 pounds.

The remaining Tigers all collected losses in round one, with Kade Moore (133), Conway (157) and Colton Hawks (184) all losing by technical fall and Josh Edmond (141) dropping a battle in overtime.

SESSION II

In the first match of the evening session for the Tigers, Conway secured a decision victory in the consolation pigtail bout to advance into the first round of wrestlebacks. Moore faced off against returning 125-pound third-place finisher Anthony Noto, where he dropped a close match to end his tournament. Edmond followed, dropping his second-consecutive match in sudden victory.

On the top side of the bracket, two wrestlers represented the Black and Gold. At 165 pounds, Steed looked to avenge a loss to Cam Amine, before ultimately falling short and dropping down to the consolation bracket. However, O’Toole quickly turned the tides, securing several takedowns in the third period to advance with a comeback win over Stanford’s Lorenzo Norman.

Conway saw action in his second match of the night, in the first consolation round against conference foe Cobe Siebrecht of South Dakota State. The 157-pounder lost a hard-fought battle to the Jackrabbit to end his tournament. Hawks closed out the day for Missouri with a loss to the 18 seed.
