Wildfire near Rowena closes I-84; Level 3 evacuations ordered

A wildfire that started Wednesday afternoon near Rowena, Oregon, has closed Interstate 84 between Mosier and The Dalles.

The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has issued Level 3 (Go Now!) evacuations from Rowena River Ferry Road east to River Road.

Level 2 (Be Set) evacuations are in place from Seven Mile Hill Road to Mountain View Drive, south to Chenowith Creek Road and Browns Creek Road and east to West 7th Street.

Deputies also issued Level 1 (Be Ready) notices for residents west of Chenoweth Loop Road and Chenowith Creek Road.

The Rowena Fire is estimated to be about 50 acres. A temporary shelter is being set up at The Dalles Middle School located at 1100 East 12th Street.

The Gloria Center, located on 2505 West 7th Street, will also open as an emergency shelter until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials with the Oregon Department of Transportation said just after 2 p.m. that I-84 was closed in both directions between mileposts 64 and 82.

A second wildfire on the other side of the Columbia River also broke out Wednesday near Carson, Washington.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office has issued Level 2 (Be Set) evacuation notices for State Road 14 between mileposts 47 and 55.

The Grant Lake Fire, which is estimated to be about 50 acres, has shut down travel in both directions.

Officials are asking people to avoid the area.
