The city of Woodland invites the community to the annual César Chávez Celebration, set for Thursday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the Woodland Community & Senior Center.
Come enjoy a keynote speech from Carlos Alcala, dancing from Folklorico Latino de Woodland, music from Douglass Middle School Mariachi and refreshments provided by Concilio of Yolo County.
The holiday honors César Chávez’s legacy as a farm labor leader and civil rights activist. Chávez fought to protect and serve farm workers by co-founding the country’s first permanent agricultural union – the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) – which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union. After his passing in 1993, he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994.
Alcala currently serves as Chairperson of the Chicano Latino Caucus of the California Democratic Party and President of the Dolores Huerta Northern California Latino Democratic Club and has extensive experience supporting Chicano Latino communities. Alcala was the attorney for Chávez and the United Farm Workers labor union, a UC Berkeley professor of Chicano Studies, the Director of the Office of Civil Rights for the State of California Department of Health Care Services and the National Director of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
