Aimee Latour, funeral director at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., has been appointed to the Funeral Services Advisory Committee. With 10 years in the funeral service industry, Latour has honed her expertise in embalming and compassionate care. She fills the position of licensed embalmer on the committee.

The FSAC operates under the jurisdiction of the Arizona Department of Health Services. The Arizona Funeral Director Board had been the governing body of the funeral industry in Arizona for the past 100 years but was dissolved in March 2023 through legislative action. It was then that the funeral licensing duties (nearly 1,800 licenses) and monitoring of people and businesses engaged in the final disposition of human remains in Arizona were transferred to the Arizona Department of Health Services.

When asked why she wanted to serve on the FSAC, Latour said, “It’s important to uphold standards in our business. I wanted to be a part of it, especially with the AZ Funeral Director Board being dissolved.” She went on to say, “This career means a lot to me. I view it as a form of ministry. It is a very sacred act that we do. There are laws for a reason.”

A licensed funeral director, a licensed embalmer or a licensed cremationist each requires a separate license in Arizona. Latour is both a licensed funeral director and licensed embalmer.

Latour’s first experience in the funeral industry was in 2013. She was utilizing her cosmetology degree as a hairstylist at a local funeral home in New Orleans. This sparked her interest and fueled her desire to pursue a career in the funeral service and mortuary sciences field. She was a funeral service assistant while attending Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, earning her degree in funeral service and mortuary science.

Latour passed the Louisiana State Boards to become a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 2018. Moving to Arizona in 2021, she obtained her funeral director and embalmer licenses for the state of Arizona. Latour joined the staff at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center in 2023.
