Stars sign Matt Duchene to four-year, $18M extension

One of the top forwards is off the board.

Matt Duchene and the Dallas Stars have agreed to a four-year, $18-million contract extension, the team announced Thursday.

The 34-year-old was a point-per-game player last season with the Stars, recording 30 goals and 52 assists in 82 games last season. He added a goal and five assists in 16 playoff games.

Duchene’s 82 points ranked second-most amongst all potential unrestricted free agents this off-season. Since joining Dallas in the 2023-24 campaign, the forward has scored 55 goals and 147 points.

The Stars previously signed him to a pair of one-year, $3-million contracts after he was bought out by the Nashville Predators.

Over his 16-year career, Duchene has totalled 371 goals and 891 points over 1,138 games.

“We are thrilled to have Matt back with our organization,” Stars GM Jim Nill said in a statement. “As our team’s leading scorer last season, he helped to solidify our forward group while also providing invaluable leadership off the ice and in the community. The fit with Matt and our team has been seamless from the start, and we’re looking forward to continuing to pursue our shared goal of bringing a championship to Dallas.” 

The native of Haliburton, Ont. played for Canada at the 2014 Olympics, the 2016 World Cup and at three world championships.

The Colorado Avalanche took the Brampton Battalion product first overall in the 2009 NHL Draft. Duchene also has played for the Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets.
