Severe storms forecast Monday for South Carolina’s Midlands region

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Multiple rounds of storms have moved across the Midlands over the weekend, bringing damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Many areas across the Midlands reported wind damage and power outages over the weekend. The stormy weather could continue into the start of the week with more chances for severe weather on Monday.

There is still a very low chance of an isolated storm developing Sunday night, but the greater chance for storms returns on Monday. 

Humid conditions and instability could cause severe storms on Monday evening and night. These storms could bring damaging winds or a brief, isolated tornado as they move across the Midlands. Even if Monday’s storms do not meet severe criteria, they could still bring gusty winds.

Monday has been designated as a Weather Impact Alert Day.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has the entire Midlands under a slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for severe weather again on Monday. A slight risk for severe weather means that scattered severe storms are possible, with a few having a chance of becoming intense. 

On Monday, the highest threat is damaging winds, with a low threat of an isolated tornado. Severe storms can produce 60 mph wind gusts.

Monday’s storms are expected to begin developing by 2:00 pm and will become more scattered through the evening. There may be a brief break in the activity before more storms. A second round of storms for the day could move through during the overnight hours and should begin clearing up by 4:00 am.
