The fight to ensure justice and closure into the mysterious death of 26-year-old Suchir Balaji, OpenAI researcher turned whistleblower, goes on as his parents have shared fresh evidence related to toxicology and radiology tests done on the victim.
According to Suchir Balaji’s parents, the latest radiology report of the victim shows his skull riddled with two bullets, and a toxicology report indicates he was heavily under the influence of alcohol and GHB (“date rape drug”) at the time of his demise.
Through a fresh set of tweets made on Friday, Suchir’s mother Poornima Rao has insinuated that he was allegedly stupefied with alcohol and drugs in his apartment and later overpowered by unknown persons, who then killed him. She has also demanded a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) probe into the case and tagged its newly appointed director, Kash Patel.
Suchir’s body was found on November 26 last year, with a gunshot wound, in his apartment in San Francisco. The local police have closed the case, terming it as a suicide because of a lack of circumstantial evidence at the crime scene indicating foul play.
However, Suchir’s parents have alleged foul play in the case, accusing the local San Francisco Police Department of overlooking crucial evidence in the apartment and also a botched-up forensic investigation. Suchir’s whistleblowing activities against OpenAI back in 2024 have also raised concerns for his parents who think he might have been targeted because of that.
What did Suchir Balaji’s toxicology and radiology reports show?
A private toxicology report released by Suchir’s parents has contested the official stance of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s (OCME) ruling of suicide.
Alcohol Level Found in Blood
Analysis of postmortem blood substances at the lab revealed that Balaji had a 0.178% blood alcohol concentration, which is considered high toxicity levels but not fatal. Medical experts evaluated the toxicology results to indicate that Balaji was completely incapacitated during his final moments because his brain functions remained minimal together with his ability to move, and his reaction speed suffered.
Precise movements such as shooting a firearm would have become extraordinarily challenging because of his impaired state. The absence of alcohol records or empty bottles from Balaji’s apartment raised questions about where he consumed alcohol since no explicit evidence existed to indicate his alcohol consumption sites.
Combined effects of alcohol & GHB
The medical report found concerning concentrations of GHB (a common “party drug” or “rape drug”) which acts as a depressant in the human brain. The laboratory results from December 9, 2024 showed 67,000 ng/mL then repeated with a value of 54,000 ng/mL on December 12, 2024 at levels both above therapeutic use and toxic thresholds.
Such levels of GHB exposure can cause individuals to pass out and then lose consciousness and experience compromised breathing, which may result in fatal outcomes. Rapid onset combined with memory-loss effects creates a warning sign for police because such symptoms indicate Balaji might have been unable to defend himself when the fatal bullet entered his body.
Radiologist Report by Dr. Daniel Cousin, MD
Dr. Daniel Cousin, MD, who holds Harvard training and board certification in radiology together with two decades of practice experience, analyzed the case to identify important facts about the wound path.
The firearm pattern describing the downward path into Balaji’s brainstem needed both precision and hand stability, which became unattainable due to the combination of alcohol and GHB in his bloodstream. The precise targeting direction toward the brainstem becomes exceptionally difficult to duplicate in a self-directed death, especially when there is substantial cognitive impairment, according to Dr. Cousin.
Conclusion
A fresh piece of evidence shown by Suchir’s parents poses a few pertinent questions to the local police regarding the criminal investigation into the case. It remains to be seen whether the new FBI team helmed by Kash Patel would pick up Suchir’s case.
