MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK)—On Friday evening, family and friends gathered at Dumont Plaza for a farewell fundraiser in honor of American Idol contestant Jamal Roberts.

Roberts has been on this season’s American Idol, getting through Hollywood week, and so his community within the city of Meridian saw fit to host a farewell fundraiser in honor of him and all that he has accomplished so far on the show.

Jamal was thrilled to see so many familiar faces. He says that being an educator to the youth is fulfilling because he can show them that it’s possible to chase your dreams no matter where you come from.

“I always had a thing for kids; I love kids; I love the little ones, watching them grow up and instilling in them what was instilled in me. You got to train them up as a child, and then they learn from that, and then when they grow old, they won’t depart, So i feel like me working with kids, me doing this is a big stepping stone for them and showing them that they don’t have to play video games all the time or do this or be in the streets. When you set your mind to it, you can do whatever you want to do,” Jamal Roberts says.

The event lasted from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m., and Roberts sang a few songs for his community.
