As it usually happens on Tuesdays, baseball finds a way to be incongruous. The Yankees have now been shut out for three straight games, which is something that not even the Rockies have done this season. On the other hand, we saw an average of over nine runs per game across the landscape, with the aforementioned Rockies leading the charge of three teams that went into double-digit scoring. We were also given four one-run games and two impressive walk-offs, but the spotlight fell on the west, where one of the biggest rivalries in baseball continues to get more zesty…

Today’s Headlines

Gettin’ Jiggy With It

Every Padres-Dodgers game in recent times has become appointment viewing, with both teams appearing to have true disdain for each other. However, the dirty little secret of it is that LA has made it a habit to come out on top, just like it happened last night, improving to 4-1 against San Diego in 2025. The thrilling 8-6 had it all, with an old-school trade of hit-by-pitch stars that led to Dave Roberts‘ ejection, followed by a defining five-run inning that allowed the Dodgers to hold on. The key moment of the game came in a 12-pitch at-bat from Will Smith, as he took every pitch from reliever Jeremiah Estrada until he got what he wanted, an inside fastball that became a two-run blast. It is also important to give due credit to Andy Pages, who is slowly becoming the team’s X factor amid a lineup full of stars. Hitting at the seven spot, Pages went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, powered by his first career multi-homer game. Even as the Dodgers had to use a bullpen game, with six pitchers juggling around nine hits and six walks allowed, it was still enough to stave off the Padres, who have now fallen five games behind their bitter rivals.

Bronx Drought

After four straight losses, the Yankees were probably happy to see soft-tossing Kyle Hendricks as the opposing starting pitcher. After all, the crafty veteran came in with a 5.20 ERA and 1.50 HR/9, which sounds like a dangerous formula to pitch at Yankee Stadium. Instead, Hendricks delivered his first scoreless outing since early April, limiting the Yankees to four hits and a walk over six frames with a season-high nine strikeouts, earning his fifth win of the season. Even as New York’s Will Warren was electric with 11 Ks over six innings, the Angels did just enough damage to earn a 4-0 win as the Bronx crowd let out a few boos in the process. Following last week’s commanding sweep of the Royals, the Yankees have now lost five straight, scoring only four runs in that span. With this third straight shutout loss, it marks only the seventh time in franchise history that the Bombers have gone three consecutive games without a run scored.

Bittersweet Welcome

Tuesday was an eventful day for the San Francisco Giants, as they pulled out all the stops to welcome Rafael Devers to his new grounds. After an introductory press conference and a standing ovation in his first at-bat, it became clear that Devers is now seen as the savior for this franchise. Alas, a tough 3-2 loss to the Guardians served as a reminder that this offense needs much more than a Devers-sized bat to fix its issues. Even as the newly minted Giant went 2-for-5 with an RBI, the rest of the offense faltered at the worst moments, with the team going 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position, stranding the bases loaded in the ninth to seal the loss. Robbie Ray was good-but-not-great, taking only his second loss of 2025 after allowing three runs over six innings. Even as the Guardians were limited to six hits, they made the most of them, with four going for extra bases, highlighted by Gabriel Arias‘ clutch solo homer that gave the Guardians a lead they would not relinquish.

Gabriel Arias’ go-ahead homer is the difference for the @CleGuardians.

Smooth Sailing

In what has to be considered one of the most well-rounded wins of the season, the Seattle Mariners destroyed the Red Sox in all facets of the game, via an 8-0 final score. In terms of pitching, starter Bryan Woo befuddled Boston completely, beginning the game with four hitless innings before Marcelo Mayer obtained one of the only two hits of the contest for the Red Sox. Woo finished his night with an efficient seven scoreless innings, allowing the lone hit and two walks versus six strikeouts. On offense, Seattle was also impressive, with a six-RBI performance from Cal Raleigh that was headlined by a grand slam – his league-leading 27th homer of the season. However, the exclamation point of the game came before a run had even been scored. After hitting a single to lead off the second, none other than Rowdy Tellez (listed at 270 pounds) took off for second and earned a rare steal, which probably served as inspiration for his teammates to score at will. In what was his 726th game in the majors, Tellez now has five career stolen bases.

ROWDY TELLEZ IS SPEED 😤

Best Moments From Yesterday

Barging In

In a matchup of fringe contenders, the Arizona Diamondbacks took a hard-fought one-run lead over the Blue Jays into the ninth, with closer-du-jour Shelby Miller tasked with preserving the win. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. accounting for all of the team’s RBI to that point, Miller needed a 1-2-3 inning to avoid facing him, which he did…for all the wrong reasons. After a quick out, Miller allowed a game-tying homer to Bo Bichette, adding to Arizona’s bullpen woes. Only five pitches later, Addison Barger called the game, blasting a 408-foot homer to right field, giving Toronto an impressive 5-4 walk-off win. It marked Arizona’s 36th loss of the season, with 23 of them coming after the team had a lead.

Piñata Ball

In a terribly lopsided contest that saw the Cardinals hammer the White Sox via a 12-2 final, Alec Burleson delivered one of the most extreme RBI hits of the season. Facing Chicago reliever Jordan Leasure, Burleson saw a 95-mph fastball that appeared at eye level to say the least. Most hitters would swing hopelessly at that type of offering, and a foul ball would be a positive result if you chose to swing. Instead, Burleson displayed impressive bat control to deliver a flat swing that created a run-scoring line drive. It became the third hit of the day for Burleson, and it is obvious to see why he is hitting .305 for the season.

HOW DID ALEC BURLESON HIT THIS PITCH?!

Brotherly Love

Despite a brief stint during his 2024 debut in the majors and already amassing 62 games in 2025, Mets youngster Luisangel Acuña had not shared the field with his older brother, Atlanta superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. After the latter finally got over his injuries, it was time for the brothers to meet as part of the Atlanta-New York rivalry, where they both took in the special moment with a warm embrace. Even as the younger Acuña did not start the game, he came in late as a defensive replacement, while Ronald was instrumental to Atlanta’s win, walking three times and scoring twice. The heartfelt moment was a nice background for a remarkable Atlanta comeback, as the team won 5-4 in the tenth after a three-run eighth that tied the game and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Injuries and Other Moves

⚾ The Mets have placed starting pitcher Tylor Megill on the 15-day IL with a right elbow sprain. While the move is retroactive to June 15, the injury is expected to be significant, with Megill probably being sidelined between four and five weeks. So far this season, he holds a 3.95 ERA.

⚾ Toronto dropped two pitchers from its active roster, as Erik Swanson was designated for assignment and Bowden Francis was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder impingement. Francis had held a rotation spot despite an elevated ERA, and now the Blue Jays will have to get creative when it comes to their starting five.

⚾ Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos was benched for last night’s game (an 8-3 loss to the Marlins) after manager Rob Thomson disciplined him for what was called an “inappropriate comment” during Monday’s series opener. The confrontation happened after Castellanos was removed for defensive purposes, and the benching ended his consecutive-game streak at 236. While there is no indication that the situation will escalate, it is something to monitor in the upcoming days.
