Chelsea Women skipper Millie Bright is raring to go against Barcelona in the second leg of our UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final and believes that home advantage will play a key role in attempting to overturn the deficit.
Our captain was disappointed with the performance in the first game in Spain, in which two goals in the last eight minutes of the match gave Barcelona a 4-1 lead heading into the second leg. But for serial winner Bright, nothing is impossible.
‘Yeah, of course, it’s a big ask, but going into any game and trying to perform against a top team is a big ask,’ she said.
‘Nothing is impossible within football or in sport if you have the right mentality, the right attitude. I think the biggest thing coming off the first leg is we didn’t present ourselves in the right way. We didn’t play as Chelsea with our core values and represent the badge, the kit. You put that kit on and you want to play in a certain manner. I think that’s where we were really disappointed within ourselves.
‘I think defending has been something that we’ve been really good at throughout the season. We’ve been really strong and really hard to beat, hard to score against. So I think for us, that was a massive disappointment. We weren’t at our best, but we’ve got an opportunity to bounce back and to be able to show ourselves.
‘So I think that’s the exciting thing for the group. We’ve been having a really good week, working really hard. Everyone knows what we need to do, but we also know what we’re capable of. So we have a lot of confidence going into the game.
‘It’s a fantastic opportunity to really show what Chelsea are about. Let’s remember that they’re coming to our house and it’s our home turf and we want to play in our conditions.’
Our captain made her 200th Women’s Super League appearance in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday, racking up yet another milestone during her incredible career in Blue.
That experience will of course stand her in good stead for leading the team out on Sunday, as we face the big task ahead of us against Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.
‘I think we’ve got a lot of experience within our group,’ continued the skipper. ‘We’ve got a real mix of experience and younger players, but I don’t think it matters what your age is. As a team, we set out a task which is in front of us. We set out a game plan.
‘Like I said, regardless of your age or experience, having that right mentality, anything’s possible. But for the more senior players, it’s about keeping everyone in a calm state. We’ve got nothing to lose going into this game. It’s about going out there, leaving absolutely everything on pitch and giving it our all. And that’s what we’re going to do.’
Tickets are still available to support Millie and the team against Barcelona in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final on Sunday 27 April. You can secure your seat here.
