UPDATE: Luis Torrens entered the game as a defensive replacement after the Mets substituted Starling Marte for Hayden Senger in the bottom of the eighth inning.
NEW YORK — Bad weather won’t be the only obstacle the Mets will have to overcome against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday.
About 20 minutes before first pitch, the club announced that catcher Luis Torrens was scratched from the lineup with a right forearm contusion. Hayden Senger will make his Citi Field debut instead.
The Mets don’t have any other catchers on the roster and will have to resort to an emergency catcher should Senger get injured.

Torrens is 5-for-19 (.263 batting average) with two doubles, a home run and two RBIs in seven games this season.
The Mets purchased Torrens’s contract from the Yankees on May 31 last season after designating Omar Narváez for assignment. With catcher Francisco Alvarez recovering from a broken thumb, Torrens was quickly inserted into the lineup.
In 47 games, Torrens batted .229 with a .665 OPS, including 11 extra-base hits and 15 RBIs.
Torrens’s biggest strength comes in his fielding. Of the four catchers the Mets fielded last season, he was the most successful at catching runners stealing.
- Torrens – 15 stolen bases in 28 attempts (46.6%)
- Alvarez – 66 stolen bases in 80 attempts (17.5%)
- Narváez – 33 stolen bases in 35 attempts (5.7%)
- Tomás Nido – 26 stolen bases in 32 attempts (18.8%)
This season, he’s asked to do much of the same, filling in for Alvarez, who is recovering from a fractured hamate on his left hand.
Alvarez has begun taking batting practice and should soon begin a rehab assignment. In the meantime, the Mets hope Torrens can stay healthy with Senger continuing to back him up.
