Melissa Benoist’s life off screen and story behind scar | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Netflix’s latest gripping crime drama, The Waterfront, is set to premiere on June 19, boasting a star-studded cast.

It is expected to be a treat for fans of Ozark and Breaking Bad.

Leading the show is a star from Mindhunter, another hit series from Netflix, who will be joined by Melissa Benoist among others.

The Waterfront delves into the dysfunctional Buckley family as they resort to increasingly perilous methods to maintain their crumbling fishing empire in North Carolina, according to the show’s synopsis.

Benoist, who portrays Bree Buckley, is no stranger to leading a major series herself. Here’s everything you need to know.

From Glee to Supergirl.

Melissa Benoist, born in 1988, was primarily raised in Colorado following her parents’ divorce. As a teenager, she performed at Disneyland and pursued musical theatre studies in college before moving to New York City to kickstart her career, reports the Mirror US.

Her first significant screen role was as a regular in the fifth season of Glee, where she played Marley Rose.

The auditions for her part in the show were so lengthy that she began work on the same day she discovered she had been cast. She wasn’t asked back for Glee’s final season and couldn’t appear in the show’s last episode as she was filming the pilot of Supergirl at the time.

Melissa Benoist, who soared into the spotlight as Kara Zor-El in 2015, made history as the first female lead in a prime time superhero TV series since the iconic Wonder Woman series ended in 1979. Her portrayal of Supergirl lasted for six seasons, concluding in 2021 within The CW’s Arrowverse.

Scar

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a noticeable scar above Benoist’s eyebrows, which some believe stems from a childhood biking accident involving a reversing taxi. Yet, in an interview, Benoist revealed that she was once advised to cover up a chickenpox scar on her forehead but chose not to.

This decision paid off when she landed a role where the scar was seen as adding to her ‘human’ appeal.

Benoist’s tenure as Supergirl wasn’t confined to her own series; she also graced other Arrowverse shows such as The Flash, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. As the Supergirl saga continues with a new film adaptation in the works, actress Milly Alcock is set to don the cape.

Melissa Benoist was previously married to her Glee co-star Blake Jenner. While the exact date of their nuptials remains unclear, it’s believed they wed around 2013.

Their marriage ended when Benoist filed for divorce in 2016, citing “irreconcilable differences”. In a candid revelation, she disclosed that an eye injury sustained in 2015 was the result of domestic violence, explaining that a phone thrown at her during an altercation caused damage to her iris and left her with a permanently dilated pupil.

In 2020, Jenner penned a lengthy Instagram post confessing to causing Benoist’s eye injury and acknowledging the abuse throughout their relationship.

Benoist tied the knot again in 2019 after meeting actor Chris Wood on the Supergirl set. Although they crossed paths in 2016, their romance didn’t blossom until 2017.

The couple welcomed their first child into the world in 2020.

The Waterfront is streaming on Netflix from June 19.
