Lorde has unveiled details of her upcoming fourth studio album, titled Virgin, which is set to be released on June 27 through Republic Records. Below, you can view the cover art for the new album.
The revealing of Virgin comes shortly after the debut of her new single “What Was That” last week. Produced in collaboration with Jim-E Stack, Daniel Nigro, and several other contributors, this track is one of the 11 songs that will appear on Virgin.
The production of Virgin was led by Lorde alongside Jim-E Stack. The album also features additional input from Nigro, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged of Inc. No World, Buddy Ross, and Devonté Hynes of Blood Orange. Spike Stent and Tom Elmhirst took on the mixing duties for the album, with Chris Gehringer handling the mastering.
In a heartfelt email to her fans, Lorde expressed:
THE COLOUR OF THE ALBUM IS CLEAR. LIKE BATHWATER, WINDOWS, ICE, SPIT. COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY. THE LANGUAGE IS DIRECT AND UNEMOTIONAL. THE SOUNDS MAINTAIN CONSISTENCY WHEREVER FEASIBLE. MY AIM WAS TO FULLY REVEAL MYSELF. TO CREATE A WORK THAT MIRRORS MY FEMININITY: RAW, PRIMAL, INNOCENT, REFINED, OPEN, SPIRITUAL, MASCULINE.
I FEEL BOTH PROUD AND VULNERABLE ABOUT THIS ALBUM. THERE’S NO PLACE FOR PRETENSE. I BELIEVE THAT SHARING THE MOST INTIMATE PARTS OF OURSELVES THROUGH MUSIC IS WHAT ULTIMATELY LIBERATES US.
While her previous album, Solar Power, was released in 2021, Lorde has since released several visuals for tracks from the album like “Oceanic Feeling” and “The Path”, and also produced an EP featuring Māori language versions of songs from Solar Power.
Beyond her latest album, Lorde has been actively engaged in various projects. She participated in a discussion with Hunter Schafer from Euphoria on The A24 Podcast, launched a radio station on Sonos called Solarsystym, and covered Rosalía’s “Hentai.”
More recently, she delivered a cover of “Take Me to the River,” collaborated with Charli XCX on “Girl, So Confusing Featuring Lorde,” and worked with Marlon Williams on “Kāhore He Manu E.”
