LISTEN: ‘New York Times, You’ve Gone Rogue’

First, the New York Times reported that it would no longer endorse in local races. Then, it put together a panel of 15 New Yorkers to issue a sort-of endorsement with nearly half of its members, including FAQ NYC host Christina Greer, favoring Brad Lander. Then, just after Lander began campaigning on the panel’s nod and cross-endorsed with leading leftist Zohran Mamdani, the paper published an un-endorsement editorial flatly saying the Democrats candidates were all pretty bad and that New Yorkers shouldn’t rank Mamdani at all.

Greer gives her perspective on the Times’ panel (“everyone’s a trope, right”), and the mixed message the paper sent by in effect overruling its own panel to blast Mamdani, quickly dismiss Lander, and suggest, without directly saying so, that voters should back Andrew Cuomo given that the race in their telling is a choice between the two leading candidates.

Hosts Greer, Katie Honan and Harry Siegel discuss all that and much more as early voting has started in the primary — and Mayor Eric Adams is looming in the general election.
