The relationship between the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford appeared tenuous throughout the start of the 2025 offseason. The team allowed Stafford’s representation to speak with other teams about a prospective trade, and there were rumblings that Stafford could leave for a few interested teams.
Cooler heads eventually prevailed, though, and the two sides agreed on a new contract so Stafford could remain with the Rams. The decision capped off what Rams general manager Les Snead called a “grueling month,” and he explained to ESPN’s Pat McAfee that Stafford and the team decided it was better to chase a championship together than apart.
“At the end of the day, everyone — Matthew, his family, Sean [McVay], our coaching staff, myself, our organization — we all realized … we really wanna take on this journey together,” Snead said, “and it was, let’s call it ‘cool’ to rekindle our relationship, get rejuvenated to chase great.”
Stafford has elevated the Rams since he joined the team in 2021. Los Angeles won a Super Bowl in his first season with the team and has made the playoffs in three of Stafford’s four seasons with the Rams. While Stafford’s future remains on a year-to-year basis, the Rams have a clear path to contention with him under center than trying to find his replacement elsewhere.
