Legislators seek to rename Patroon Island Bridge the Sgt. Henry Johnson Memorial Bridge

Patroon Island Bridge to become Sgt. Henry Johnson Memorial Bridge under legislation introduced by bipartisan lawmakers.

Legislators are seeking to change the name of the Patroon Island Bridge to the Sgt. Henry Johnson Memorial Bridge – less than one week after President Donald Trump decided to strip the native Albany hero’s name from a Louisiana military base.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is introducing legislation to rename the bridge the Sgt. Henry Johnson Memorial Bridge.

The announcement was made by a bipartisan group of lawmakers at the state Capitol.

The Trump administration last week announced that it was changing the name of the U.S. Army base in Louisiana back to Fort Polk, which is named after a Confederate general.

This was part of the administration’s efforts targeting diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
