Jannik Sinner gives his honest feeling about having to play Alexander Bublik in Halle

Since that difficult defeat, Sinner has been given advice from his coach that appeared to work in his first round match at the Halle Open against Yannick Hanfmann.

This means that Sinner has now set up a match with Alexander Bublik, who he has now given his verdict on.

This will be the second time that they have played this month, with Sinner beating Bublik in the Roland Garros quarter-finals.

However, when speaking in his press conference, Sinner suggested that former Halle Open champion Bublik could be more of a threat to him on grass.

“He’s a very talented player,” began Sinner. “He likes or loves playing on grass, which is his favourite surface. He has won against me here and also won the tournament, so it will be a very difficult game. 

“It will be a very interesting game. I think he serves really well, it will be incredibly difficult to break him. I have to stay very focused on my serve and then see what I can do. It will be a very exciting game, let’s see how it goes.”

Sinner and Bublik are the only two remaining former champions in the Halle Open draw, with Ugo Humbert losing in the first round.

As he continued to be questioned about his next opponent, Sinner was asked if he likes playing against more unorthodox players like Bublik.

“You simply have little control because you have to get through on your service games and then see what you can do on the return games,” Sinner responded. “It’s not just Bublik who is like this, there are a few others that are doing very, very well.

“I think on grass he is one of the best servers we have. And he can also play very well from the back of the court. He can hit good volleys, he can hit drop shots. He can actually do everything. So we will see what the game is like. I’ll just play as concentrated as possible and then we’ll see.”

Their upcoming match on the Halle grass will be a sixth meeting between the pair, with Sinner leading the head-to-head 4-1.

However, things are more even when it comes to grass courts, with Sinner and Bublik winning one match apiece on the surface.

Bublik’s victory on grass came in his run to the Halle title in 2023, but Sinner was forced to retire in that match due to injury.

Sinner won their only ever completed match on grass at the Libema Open, which also took place in 2023.

The next instalment in their head-to-head will take place on Thursday, June 19.
