HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A high-profile media personality in the Grand Strand is reeling, from what he claims is a politically motivated act of attempted violence against him and his family.
Chad Caton said he woke up to a scary and unnecessary swatting incident at his home around 3 a.m. Monday in the Arrowhead community.
Caton is a local conservative influencer. He says he believes he was targeted for his political views.
“I was so angry about what my beautiful wife had to go through and my dog who’s just innocent personified. You wanna come after me on Twitter and stuff, I’m fine with that,” he said. “You don’t like my politics fine, but this isn’t what we’re supposed to be about.”
Caton said he and his wife were asleep when they woke up to loud banging on their front door, believing someone was trying to break in. He said they got up and walked out to their living with their hands up as police officers instructed them to come out their front door. He said officers were flashing lights into their home and had guns drawn.
“Please don’t shoot my wife, please don’t shoot my wife. I’m being swatted right now,” Caton said he told officers.
He explained since two of his other personal friends were also targeted, he and his wife spoke and created a plan if they were to be swatted. He said they both agreed to put their dog Diesel into their primary bedroom to protect him.
Horry County police confirm they received an overnight call about a reported incident, but once they arrived, they say the home was quiet, and no incident occurred.
Caton said officers told him they received a call about someone breaking into the home, armed.
He said he believed it is also part of a national uptick in swatting calls targeting conservative media figures like him.
“This isn’t a game. We’re talking about people’s lives. For what, because I like Donald Trump? Really? It’s disgusting and it’s dangerous” he stated.
WMBF News reached out to the FBI who said they are aware of the recent swatting calls targeting influencers like Caton. They said more information would eventually be released.
Caton said he is thankful he and his wife and dog are safe. He said he is also appreciative of the Horry County Police Department.
This is an ongoing investigation.
