Areas of heavy rain will impact some outdoor events between now and Saturday night.
INDIANAPOLIS — Good morning, Central Indiana!
Today—Friday, June 13th—marks a notable shift in our weather pattern, as muggy air streams into the region and rounds of rain and storms make their return. Whether you’re heading to work, planning an evening out, or prepping for a big weekend event, here’s what you need to know.
8 AM Friday Update: Showers Increasing
As expected, showers are expanding over south-central Indiana as an approaching upper-low gets closer to Indiana. Showers and downpours will continue to increase for the remainder of morning and rain rates with some of the cells on radar today will be excessive and produce areas of flash flooding.
All of Indiana is in a risk (Level 1 out of 4) for Flash Flooding today and tomorrow…even without thunderstorms. In fact, there may not be a lot of lightning with showers today due to the tropical (deep layer of warm, moist air from top-to-bottom in the atmosphere) nature of the airmass over the region.

Midday through evening: Increasing rain and storm risk
By midday into the afternoon, rain coverage and intensity will ramp up, with the potential for locally heavy downpours, especially during peak heating hours.
There are two key scenarios for how this unfolds:
-
Widespread midday rain may temporarily limit late-day rain/storm development and less coverage.
-
Less midday rain would allow the atmosphere to destabilize more, setting the stage for widespread and heavier rain later in the day and evening.
Either way, plan for bouts of showers, some of which will be heavy at times and the potential of localized flooding from rain rates of two inches per hour or more in heavier showers, thanks to a very moist airmass over the region.

⚠️ Evening events at risk for heavy rain
A number of high-profile events are scheduled for tonight, including:
-
Game 4 of the NBA Finals (Pacers Watch Parties)
-
Indianapolis Indians Baseball Game
-
Zoobilation
-
Russell Dickerson Concert at Everwise Amphitheater
-
Italian Street Festival
Outdoor plans may be disrupted by heavy showers or even flash flooding in spots. Stay Weather Aware and monitor the radar closely if you’re heading out!

Flash flooding is a growing concern
Due to the potential for high rainfall rates, Flash Flood Warnings are possible today this weekend. A slow-moving upper-level system and persistent tropical-like moisture will combine to fuel repeated rounds of heavy rain.

Looking ahead: Indy Pride Parade and Father’s Day

-
Sunday (Father’s Day): The upper low will begin to exit the region. While a few spotty showers are still possible, rain coverage drops significantly to around 30%—so it’s looking better for Father’s Day activities.
