Following in Trump’s footsteps: This South American country is considering sending migrants to El Salvador

Were I to try and imitate Donald Trump in any way, there are a few categories I would avoid: hair, tanning levels, being within six feet of Stephen Miller, and a love of gold household items. Nothing personal—it just wouldn’t work in our house.

I certainly wouldn’t copy him in his love of Salvadoran prisons. But I don’t think we’d get on well enough over a coffee to even reach that point in the conversation.

That’s where Peru is different. It turns out that the Peruvian Prime Minister, Eduardo Arana—who runs the South American country with a population of 33.85 million—has opened the door to mimicking Trump’s radical idea to deport prisoners to the Central American nation.

The United States has, in a move that sounds as ridiculous as it seems, paid the Salvadoran government to take a number of Venezuelans into their notoriously strict prison camps, which have drawn criticism from human rights groups due to their harsh nature and tough conditions. While Trump will tell you they are gang members, that is certainly not the case for all of them—Kilmar Abrego García and Jerce Reyes Barrios made headlines for several weeks.

Back to Peru: “The government is evaluating bilateral cooperation mechanisms for the transfer of highly dangerous foreign inmates to their countries of origin, including specialized centers such as the CECOT (Terrorism Confinement Center) in El Salvador,” Arana recently told Congress.

Trump’s arrests come as part of a package political deal that has included riots in Los Angeles, threats to invade Greenland, and seemingly forgetting about Vladimir Putin and his illegal invasion of Ukraine. And turning Gaza into a theme park. There’s the ‘broligarchy’ as well. And the Gulf of ‘America’. I almost forgot about tariffs.

On his strict immigration laws, it was recently revealed that Homeland Security has listed the Jumpman—the iconic silhouette of Michael Jordan trademarked by Nike—as a possible gang marker, and that having it tattooed on your body could now be used as evidence of gang affiliation.
