Areas of flooding and funnels today in central Indiana

Locally heavy rainfall will cause some street flooding, and there’s a chance some rotating showers will trigger funnels.

INDIANAPOLIS — Good morning, central Indiana!

We continue to track very humid air and the influence of a slow-moving upper-level low pressure system, which will once again produce areas of very heavy rainfall through sunset tonight.

Additional rainfall today will again been wide-ranging, from some areas getting a quarter-inch to other areas getting 2″-4″+ in short time — similar to Florida downpours. We expect areas of flooding to occur in the heaviest showers and you should avoid driving into water-covered roads.

Rainfall update and flood threat

Since overnight, and into early this morning, a persistent axis of downpours north of Indianapolis has dropped 2 to 5+ inches of rain the past 24 hours, according to radar estimates and ground reports.

📍 What to expect today:

  • Rain expands southward toward the I-70 corridor and the Indy metro by early afternoon.

  • Rainfall totals will vary significantly:

  • Some flooding is likely in areas with the heaviest rain.

  • Avoid driving into water-covered roads. Turn around, don’t drown.

Cold air funnel possibility

With tropical-like air and circulation around the upper low, brief “cold air” funnels may form today. These rarely touch down but can be startling if spotted.

Looking ahead: Father’s Day

Sunday (Father’s Day) brings improving conditions:

  • Spotty showers, but much less widespread than Saturday.

  • Humid air sticks around, with highs in the low to mid 80s.

  • Expect hazy sunshine as the upper-level system finally pulls away.

Next week: Storm clusters and heat building

The weather pattern turns more active next week:

  • Hotter air expands into the Ohio Valley.

  • Central Indiana will be on the edge of the heat dome, setting the stage for clusters of strong storms at times.

  • We’ll continue to fine-tune the timing and severity of those systems.

Plan ahead:

  • Have indoor alternatives for any outdoor plans today.

  • Monitor flood-prone areas closely.
