ADOT: SR-87 closed south of Payson due to brush fire

The closure is due to a brush fire in the area of Deer Creek, south of Payson.

PAYSON, Ariz. — Access to Arizona State Route 87 may be restricted on Friday due to a brush fire in the area of Deer Creek, south of Payson.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said SR-87 was closed in both directions due to the fire around Deer Creek. The left southbound lane was closed near milepost 234 and the northbound lanes are closed at Bush Highway near Fountain Hills.

The other southbound lane has reopened at the State Route 188 junction.

The Tonto National Forest said the brush fire is about 3-5 acres in size near milepost 234 and crews are working to contain the fire.

ADOT said there’s no estimated time for when the highway may reopen.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
