The Cyber Police Department has issued guidelines for parents on how to ensure children’s safe use of the internet. They stress the importance of discussing cyberbullying, educating children on the “billboard test,” and overseeing the sharing of personal details online.
In their latest information campaign, “Cyberbullying: Awareness and Prevention,” the Cyber Police, alongside other campaign partners, have shared the following advice for adults to help children navigate the digital world safely:
- Talk about Cyberbullying: It’s crucial to have open discussions with children about online safety and the risks of cyberbullying. Honest conversations can help children understand and avoid these dangers.
- Build Trusting Relationships: Foster a trusting environment where your child feels comfortable coming to you with concerns. Pay close attention to their emotional well-being and be there to offer support when needed.
- Clarify Boundaries Between the Real and Virtual Worlds: Children often don’t realize the risks associated with online interactions. It’s essential to monitor their online behavior and teach them that personal information is private and protected by law. Ensure they know what is appropriate to share on the internet and what should remain private.
- Teach the “Billboard Test”: Instruct children to consider whether they would want a photo or video of themselves shared on a large billboard in a public space. They should always seek permission before posting photos of others. Remind them that anything shared online is permanent.
- Handling Negative Interactions: Teach children how to respond to online insults or provocations. Encourage them to ignore the aggressor, not to engage emotionally, and to avoid giving the person the reaction they want.
