The Ollera Creek Bridge, which connects Townsville and Ingham, will reopen on Monday night, allowing freight, supply, and emergency vehicles to pass. The reopening will occur in two stages: emergency and freight vehicles will be prioritized starting around 8 p.m. on Monday, and general traffic will be allowed to cross from Tuesday afternoon, with traffic control and speed limits in place. The Department of Transport and Main Roads expedited the reopening ahead of expected flooding. While the bridge requires further repairs, this is a vital step for reconnecting flood-impacted communities.
This reopening will help restock local stores, and businesses like cafes and restaurants can begin receiving deliveries again. Essential services will also be able to reach those in need. Despite the positive news, many communities in the area remain without power, with Ergon Energy continuing restoration efforts. Some areas, including parts of Hinchinbrook, remain without power, with around 900 people still affected.
Additionally, severe weather warnings for heavy rainfall and flash flooding are in place, with potential rainfall totals of up to 250 millimeters in some areas. The Bureau of Meteorology has cautioned that places like Townsville, Georgetown, and Ingham could face more flooding in the coming days.
