Song about UofL Cardinals growing in popularity as team heads into NCAA Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) -It’s been a while since there’s been this much enthusiasm surrounding the University of Louisville basketball team. The Cards play Creighton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on March 20 at 12:15 p.m.

One man feeling the excitement is behind a song that’s played at many University of Louisville football and basketball games.

B. Simm says music has always been his passion. In 2012, he combined that passion with his love for his hometown of Louisville. That same year, UofL’s football team upset the Florida Gators in the Sugar Bowl. After the win, Simm wrote and recorded a song called “You Don’t Want These Cards.”

He shot a music video outside the Cards Stadium, featuring legendary coach Denny Crum. Simm says the song has been streamed close to a million times on all platforms. But in recent years, it’s dwindled.

”You definitely see a decline in the sales and the listens because obviously, we weren’t good for a while,” Simm said. “Six years. I felt it.

”Now with new head basketball coach Pat Kelsey and football coach Jeff Brohm, the excitement is back. Simm says he sees it.

“Probably 100% (difference),” he said. “They’re playing it more at games, too.”

He says he enjoys watching the crowd’s reaction to it.

“I love it because the age gap is crazy,” he said. “From 80-year-old fans to three and 4-year-olds are singing it. It kind of never dies,” Simm said.

Years ago, Simm worked out a licensing deal to release apparel with “You Don’t Want These Cards.”

With his record label, Ethika, he designed boxers featuring the Louisville skyline and things that make Louisville famous. Now from his Middletown studio Volume Recording, he’s been working on new music. A lot of it is country.

With the Cards programs now, he’s starting to feel inspired for a new song.”People ask me every year and it has to feel right. And for past six years it definitely hasn’t felt right, so we’ll see we’ll see,” B Simm said.
