Postecoglou ‘to be furious with Son Heung-min’ as new Tottenham comments circulate

Son Heung-min has had a disappointing campaign for Tottenham this season and has even found himself out of the side of late.

Ange Postecoglou named Son among the substitutes for the 2-0 Premier League loss to Fulham on Sunday (16 March), just as he did against Bournemouth a week earlier.

Leaving out Son four days prior to facing AZ Alkmaar in the second leg made sense on the face of it, given the magnitude of that match.

However, Son being dropped for the Fulham match raised more than a few eyebrows given there was no reason to rest the forward.

Postecoglou has implied that is down to fitness reasons, which many took at face value.

However, Son has now completely shot those remarks down while on duty with national side South Korea.

Son responds to fitness concerns

Son has played the full 90 minutes just once for Tottenham since February 9, coming in that 3-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar in which he used to be the best player on the pitch.

However, when asked about his fitness prior to South Korea’s clash with Oman on Thursday (20 March), Son said: “My physical condition is perfectly fine. My body is in the best shape it’s ever been.”

Those comments do not bode well for Postecoglou, with Son adding that his lack of minutes of late is purely down to the manager.

Son’s record for Tottenham this season

Son has started 33 matches for Tottenham in all competitions this season, while featuring a further seven times from the substitutes’ bench.

The South Korean is no longer a first-choice pick in the starting line-up, despite insisting his fitness is as good as it has ever been.

These latest comments show that Postecoglou is simply omitting Son, who has been linked with a Tottenham exit, based on what he perceives to be a lack of quality, rather than anything fitness related.

With 11 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season, Son remains one of the rare Tottenham attackers who has the ability to make a difference in games.

While there is no question he has dropped off, leaving him out of the side on a now regular basis seems strange on the face of it.
