The 1994 film Dumb and Dumber shaped a generation, with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’s performances being pure comedic genius. The big box office smash opened as the number one film at the box office, making almost $250 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million, meaning the profit margins were huge.

But, there’s a clever detail from the film that you likely didn’t realise at the time, and Redditors have shone a light on it, leaving people in stitches. Taking to the Reddit ‘Movie Details’ thread, someone pointed out that there was a deleted scene where the joke was revealed, but in the final cut, the joke remained a mystery, other than to the sharpest minds.

They wrote: “In ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ Lloyd Christmas was in love with Mary Swanson. Had they gotten married and she’d taken his last name, she’d be named Mary Christmas. It’s never mentioned in the movie”.

YardBarker reiterated this, explaining: “This is not merely a coincidence. In a deleted scene, Harry puts two and two together, but ultimately, they decide not to shine a light on the joke”.

On the Reddit thread, somebody posted the deleted scene, and it was met with some criticism from people who didn’t find it funny.

Someone wrote: “Wow…I’ve seen a few deleted scenes and am glad they were deleted”.

Another replied: “I’ve seen an uncut version on TV a long time ago, and was like what the f*** is this? Over the top crude humour. It totally killed the innocent stupidity of the characters”.

“So basically the sequel?” they quipped, and another Reddit user joked that they act “like that doesn’t exist”.

“Wise man. I still refuse to see it as well. In some alternate reality, there was a sequel that was true to the original and hilarious. That’s what I tell myself anyway,” they penned.

It seems like they’re not the only ones who weren’t impressed with the comedy elements of the movie, as on Rotten Tomatoes, it gets just 67% on the Tomatometer.

But others praised it, saying they were “obsessed” with the film as a kid, and had watched it so much it was “burned onto their brain,” finding it “hilarious”.

On the Reddit thread, someone took the opportunity to share that they had seen someone with that name in real life. They penned: “My high school had the graduating class photos from the 1930s on up to current, around the school.

“If I remember correctly in the 70s, there was a girl named Mary Christmas Tree. Her brother had an equally interesting name, but I can’t remember it now”.

“All we need to find is the Tree family tree and we will find his name,” one man quipped.
