INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — AES Indiana is prepping for the upcoming summer storm season and they’re warning you to do the same. Unpredictable severe weather — even outside of the U.S. — can impact Hoosiers’ summer plans and even bring dangerous situations to your neighborhood.
The Climate Prediction Center, part of NOAA, is anticipating that Indiana will have a “unseasonably hot temperatures during June, July and August,” AES Indiana says. As the thermostat rises so does the chance of strong storms and hot temperatures lasting longer than usual. Storm Track 8 says central Indiana is running later than normal for reaching our first 90-degree day, and Hoosiers probably won’t see 90 on the thermostat until this weekend.
To prep, “AES Indiana conducts routine maintenance to strengthen its power delivery system, including inspecting and replacing poles and trimming trees away from power lines,” AES said in a press release. But staying prepared is a team sport, AES Indiana says, and you need to know how to do your part.
First and foremost, take care of you and your family’s safety. Build and emergency kit with essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first aid kit — including prescription medication — and a portable charging device.
But preparation means nothing without a plan. In case of an extended power outage, make sure to have an action plan for your family. Keep a contact list for your family, friends, and neighbors. If you’re susceptible to intense heat and don’t have power, know where to go to stay cool.
Once you’ve done all of that, stay informed. AES Indiana says if there is a multi-day effort to restore power, you can follow them for updates.
