Cynthia Nixon’s personal life is somewhat mirrored in her Sex and the City character Miranda Hobbes.
Along with her co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davies, and Kim Cattrall, Cynthia found herself at the centre of a sexual revolution for women in the late 90s/early 00s.
All of a sudden, the topic of women’s sexual pleasure was no longer tabboo, and it opened the discussion about orgasms, libido, and sexual orientation among other things.
As the threads of those topics were pulled on, they unravelled sexual preferences for a lot of women, and Cynthia too was affected by this.
At the time of taking on the role of Miranda in Sex and the City, Cynthia was in a long-term relationship with New York-based photographer, actor and school teacher Danny Mozes.
Cynthia and Danny share two children Charles and Samuel (Seph), formerly named Samantha.
It was shortly after the couple welcomed their second child that they pulled the plug on their romance, and in 2004, the Sex and the City actress met and began dating political activist Christine Marinoni.
It was smooth sailing for Cynthia and Christine, who got engaged in April 2009, welcomed a child together in 2011, and wed in May 2012.
In 2012, the Sex and the City star identified herself as bisexual, and in 2018, as queer.
In a 2007 interview with The Telegraph, Cynthia said of her sexual orientation: ‘I don’t really feel I’ve changed.
‘I’d been with men all my life, and I’d never fallen in love with a woman. But when I did, it didn’t seem so strange. I’m just a woman in love with another woman.’
Speaking recently on How to Fail with Elizabeth Day, Cynthia opened up about her non-traditional family, comprised of 11 adults who created five children.
‘So, my boyfriend and I, we were together for 15 years and we had two children. My kids are respectively 28, 22, and 14. The last one – I did not give birth to him, my wife gave birth to him – and we had him with a male couple who are both his dads,’ she said.’
‘My ex – we were never married – but, he is married to a woman who was a widow and had two children – twins – from her first husband,’ Cynthia continued.
‘So yes, we have between us five children, but I think I calculated it one time and in order to get those five children, there were 11 adults involved.’
