Dricus Du Plessis has been told by one of the world’s top middleweights that he must get to the later rounds in order to defeat Khamzat Chimaev.
Number six-ranked Caio Borralho was pushing for a fight of his own against Chimaev earlier this year, but understands the dangers posed by the Swede at the top level. He feels that if the fight is to end early, it will be in favor of Chimaev, but that in latter rounds Du Plessis will get it done.
Du Plessis is a fascinating case thus far in his career; he has yet to taste defeat in the UFC octagon despite at times showing bizarre form against top level opponents. He won the middleweight title last year from Sean Strickland, and has already defended it twice, with his next defence coming at UFC 319.
Caio Borralho backs Dricus Du Plessis in later rounds against Khamzat Chimaev
Caio Borralho has experience training with Khamzat Chimaev, and understands exactly what strengths the contender will offer in his first world title effort. However, his various health issues have hindered his progress in the division, and UFC 319 will be just his third five-rounder.
Speaking with Bloody Elbow, Borralho explained that Dricus Du Plessis will need to take the fight into those championship rounds in order to win and defend his belt. “It’s a crazy fight,” he noted.
“Because it can go to Khamzat in the first or second rounds. But then if it gets past those rounds, then it’s going to go to Du Plessis. I’m never going to doubt Du Plessis again because he always shuts the doubters’ mouths so let’s see.”
Caio Borralho explains truth behind his attempted Khamzat Chimaev fight
Last month, before the Du Plessis and Chimaev fight was made official for Chicago’s August pay-per-view, Borralho had heard rumors that the champion was injured and unable to compete. He quickly offered his own services, having been forced into inactivity due to inability to get matched.
Despite having been dominated in his sparring with Chimaev years prior, he offered an interim title fight with the Swede. However, it turned out that his information was false and he never ended up getting that, or any other, fight.
“I tried it,” he continued. “I had heard that Dricus was injured and all that stuff so I tried to get the fight. But it turned out Dricus wasn’t injured so they’re still going to fight.
“Now I want to fight [Nassourdine] Imavov, he’s number one contender so that’s the fight that I want. That fight would push me or him to the belt so let’s do that.”
