A new rumor has suggested that one Avenger will be getting a lot more screen time than usual in Avengers: Doomsday, and it should be pretty obvious given their new role in the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame and several subsequent stories.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a vast expanse of characters, so much so that it is impossible for any character to have a quick turnaround from one appearance to the next. Some characters have waited years between movies featuring them in a leading role, even though, in MCU terms, their movies are usually only days or months at most apart.
According to The Cosmic Circus, one character set to get more screen time in the upcoming Avengers movie is the new Captain America, Sam Wilson. While Avengers: Doomsday is set to be packed with characters from across more than 25 years of Marvel stories, with old X-Men stars set to return alongside current MCU heroes, a new rumor has suggested that the film will definitely be “led” by Anthony Mackie in his new role as Captain America.

X-Men Legend Will Be in Kevin Feige’s Firing Line After Seemingly Blowing Big ‘Avengers’ Movie Secrets
Have some of the big surprises of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ already been spoiled, or is everyone being played?
The same report, from TCC’s Alex Perez, added that Black Panther and Shang-Chi will both have big supporting roles along with Doctor Strange, although the latter was also said to have an “uncertain” fate. Considering Benedict Cumberbatch’s sorcerer will be seen in a third solo outing sometime in the future, what this means for Doctor Strange 3 and the character’s future in the franchise is “uncertain” in itself.
Captain America Has to Lead the Avengers Into ‘Secret Wars’
While Anthony Mackie’s role in previous Avengers movies has been limited compared to some of his co-stars, his upgrade to the role of Captain America makes it impossible for him to sit on the sidelines this time around. With Doomsday giving way to Secret Wars, the disbanded Avengers team needs to be reassembled, and there is only one man for that job.
Captain America: Brave New World ended with Sam discovering for the first time that there are multiverse dangers coming to the MCU. Audiences have been privy to this information for some time, having watched many multiverse-centric movies and TV shows teasing the kind of chaos that could ensue if the multiverse was allowed to run riot. However, Phases 4-6 of the MCU have all taken place over a relatively compact timeline compared to the length of time it takes to deliver a dozen movies that tell the story, and Mackie’s Sam Wilson has not been involved in any multiverse storylines, meaning he is unaware of the dangers heading his way.
However, Brave New World and Thunderbolts* made it clear that Mackie is in the process of reassembling the Avengers to face whatever threat comes their way next. Doomsday will most likely feature that reunion taking place, which obviously would put Wilson front and centre of the story. All of this is currently speculative, though, and we will not find out for a while yet exactly what the Russo brothers have in plan for the MCU this time. After causing devastation in Avengers: Endgame, fans need to prepare for a two-year journey to the end of the multiverse that could very possibly become one of the most spectacular comic book movies ever put on screen.
