Evacuations ordered in Fallbrook after fast-moving fire burns 15 acres – NBC 7 San Diego

A brush fire sparked Monday in the North County community of Fallbrook.

The fire began in the early afternoon near the 5000 block of South Mission Road and burned a little over 20 acres. Shortly after 4 p.m. Cal Fire said the fire’s forward spread had been stopped and that it was 5% contained, though, at that time, very little smoke was visible from active flames.

Structures were threatened on Sweetgrass Lane and La Canada Road by what is being called the Mission 2 Fire, which is located not far from the River Village Plaza shopping plaza, where South Mission intersects with state Route 76 along the San Luis Rey River.

Evacuation orders were put into effect for the area east of South Mission Road, north of state Route 76 and southwest of Via Monserate.

Evacuation warnings were also issued for the area between South Mission and Grid roads, as well as south of Sycamore Drive and Knottwood Way, and north of Via Monserate.

Firefighting aircraft made fast work of the blaze, making water and retardant drops, with coordination from Cal Fire.

Firefighters were able to take advantage of a road behind a series of large estates in the area, saving all those structures from harm.

By 4 p.m., the flames had either met natural fire breaks or been extinguished by the efforts of firefighters, and little smoke was still visible. Cal Fire crews will stay on the ground for several hours mopping up hot spots. A half-dozen vehicles and a helicopter were spotted at the scene after firefighters had gained the upper hand on the incident.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
