COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – Officials said a man and woman were killed after a plane flying from the Upstate crashed near the Carolinas’ state line.
Our sister station WECT reports that deputies said they received the call around 1 p.m. on Saturday. Deputies told WECT the crash happened in a wooded area near Old Dothan Road and NC 905 near Tabor City.
WECT said an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.
Deputies told WECT that the plane, identified by the safety board as a Beech BE58, took off from Spartanburg and was on its way to Myrtle Beach.
WECT said once the safety board documents the wreckage and accident site, the airplane will be moved to a secure facility for further evaluation.
Officials with the safety board told WECT investigations are focused on the pilot, the aircraft, and the operating environment.
WECT reports officials said they will gather the following records and information:
- Flight track data
- Recordings of any air traffic control communications
- Aircraft maintenance records
- Weather forecasts and actual weather and lighting conditions around the time of the accident
- Pilot’s license, ratings, and recency of flight experience
- 72-hour background of the pilot to determine if there were any issues that could have affected the pilot’s ability to safely operate the plane
- Witness statements
- Electronic devices that could contain information relevant to the investigation
- Any available surveillance video, including from doorbell cameras
Anyone who has information, surveillance video, or witnessed the crash should email witness@ntsb.gov.
The identities of the two victims have not yet been provided.
