The third major championship of the season is well into its final 18 holes with none of the expected favorites contending at the 2025 U.S. Open. Only 67 players remain from the 156-an field that opened play at Oakmont Country Club, and less than a handful are truly in contention for the $4.3 million winner share as part of the 2025 U.S. Open purse that is again set at $21.5 million.
Serving as U.S. Open host for the 10th time, Oakmont has shown its teeth to the field as only four players entered Round 4 with under-par scores. That number is down to one with the first nine having been completed Sunday. Sam Burns, the 36- and 54-hole leader, is out in front with the final eighth of the tournament to play. Adam Scott remains his chief challenger from two back, while Viktor Hovland has struggled to cut into his deficit and make a run at the championship. Should Scott come back and pull off the win, he would became the first man in history to go more than 10 years between his first (2013 Masters) and second major championship titles.Â
Tyrrell Hatton is the only man atop the leaderboard that has actually made gains on the field, but it will take quite a lot for a one-time PGA Tour winner (2020) to run down the likes of Burns, Scott and Hovland during the final stretch of this tournament. However, given he started the U.S. Open in T49 after the first round, he’s certainly making a run of it on Sunday.
