1 dead, 11 injured in overnight shooting in Elkhart

ELKHART, Ind. (WNDU) – One person is dead and 11 others are injured after a shooting in Elkhart early Sunday morning.

Officers were called just after 1 a.m. to the 300 block of W. Garfield Avenue on a shots fired report.

They quickly learned a dozen people had been shot. One of the victims has died. They have not been identified yet.

Police say some of victims have been treated for their injuries and released from the hospital. It’s unclear how many are still in the hospital.

Investigators believe multiple people fired shots during the incident.

Police tell WNDU 16 News Now the crime scene covers a wide area between the 200 and 400 block of W. Garfield Avenue.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is now handling the investigation. If you have any information on this shooting, including photos or videos, you’re asked to call the Homicide Unit at 574-295-2825 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP (7867).

Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson issued a statement on the shooting, saying the pain and ripple effects of this shooting will be felt for a long time, and that he is “devastated by this profound loss and trauma.”
